Jo Walsh Govnet

Jo Walsh has worked as a social worker for Govnet Social Care for more than four years. Her role as a Child Protection Officer requires her to work closely with children and young people in Kingston Borough Council.

Jo is originally from County Mayo in Ireland, where she studied at Breaffy National School before attending Castlebar College of Further Education for a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Applied Social Sciences. This early passion for social care saw Jo make the move to London in 1998 and enroll at Kingston University for a degree in Social Work. The institution is highly regarded in the area of social work training, with more than 90% of students in this field finding employment in the months after graduation.

While at Kingston, Jo used her final year to focus on learning the skills necessary to working with vulnerable children. She combined academic study and employment-based training to prepare her for the career. Additionally, she took advantage of the free Kingston Language Scheme to learn Italian. She puts her knowledge of the language to good use when she visits the country with her family.

Working at Govnet Social Care has put Jo Walsh in a unique position of being able to identify children and young people at risk of neglect, harm or abuse. It’s her responsibility to establish contact and go about the process of finding a peaceful and safe outcome to such issues. Close communication and contact are necessary for these situations, something which all social workers must be able to handle with compassion and patience. Years of experience have taught Jo how to handle a variety of situations, which makes her a valuable asset to the organisation.

Outside of social care, Jo spends her free time with her husband and two young daughters. They live in Richmond Park, which is one of the greenest areas in London. Long walks in the park, horse riding and camping are some of the activities they engage in together. Additionally, Jo loves to keep fit through spinning classes and circuit training.
