J. Patrick Redmond

J. Patrick Redmond is a Midwesterner and a Kaylie Jones Books writer. His novel Some Go Hungrydraws from his experiences in rural southwestern Indiana with his family's restaurant, a Sunday-dinner favorite for the after-church crowd. When he was 17 and wrestling with his own sexual orientation, an older classmate who was perceived to be gay was murdered. His hometown reacted with indifference to the crime, which remains unsolved. It was the 1980s and AIDS was a national panic and, according to local pulpits, "God's punishment against the gays." It seemed that in Patrick's hometown, murder was punishment too.

Some Go Hungry is the story of a young man choosing to live "under the radar" in his conservative community until he no longer can. “It’s about God, guns, gays and green beans," Patrick says.

Patrick's writing has appeared in The Huffington Post, the NoH8 Campaign, The Southampton Review and in the Barnes & Noble Review's Grin & Tonic (as a collaborator). He is also the 2012 recipient of the Deborah Hecht Memorial Prize in Fiction. His novel is set to be released by Kaylie Jones Books in 2015.
