Jean-Paul Prates
Chairman and CEO in Brazil
Jean-Paul Prates is the CEO of LiqEn, a recently launched investment platform integrating Liquid Energy assets, and the Chairman of the Center for Strategies in Natural Resources and Energy (CERNE), an entity focused on the sustainable development of Equatorial Brazil.
A lawyer and economist by training, he holds a Master's degree in Energy Planning and Environmental Management from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master's degree in Petroleum Economics from the French Petroleum Institute (IFP School).
He was a Senator of the Federative Republic of Brazil (2019-2023) for the State of Rio Grande do Norte and CEO of PETROBRÁS (2023-2024) where he also began his career in 1988.
In 2023, he delivered the best result in Petrobras’ 70-year history (with no sale of strategic assets), achieving 15 operational records and an appreciation of more than 113% of the company’s stocks value (in dollars).
He has over 40 years of regional and international experience in high level advising and senior management in the areas of oil, gas, (bio)fuels, renewable energy, infrastructure and natural resources.

Co-author of Brazil's petroleum regulatory framework in 1997, and author/rapporteur at the Senate of legal frameworks for railways, offshore energy, hydrogen and CCS/CCUS, between 2019 and 2023.
He was Secretary of State for Energy of Rio Grande do Norte, responsible for achieving the state's energy self-sufficiency and national leadership in wind power.
He is also Executive Director of the Brazil-Arab Countries Institute (IBPA), Head of LIDE Energia and President of the Union of Companies in the Energy Sector of Rio Grande do Norte (Sindienergia-RN).
