Julia Furletti

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Hello,

My name is Julia Furletti and I am a second year student in the BME program at Algonquin College. I am an energetic and outgoing person that loves adventures and new experience. I use to be a competitive alpine ski racer for Mont St. Marie, it wasn’t until I had my accident that I decided take the time to ‘find myself’ and figure out what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.

I was very young the first time I tried to cook. I remember trying to make an omelette, I started the eggs and tried to cut up all the vegetables however, this attempt was unsuccessful. I did not read at the time so I looked at the picture closely and decided I would cut all my vegetables ahead of time(mise en place) before I started the eggs. This time around my venture was a complete success. Growing up my Nona (Grandmother) was always baking making her whole house smell permanently of sweet delicious heaven. I also have faun memories of my father cooking his Italian spaghetti sauce every Sunday with some Italian opera by Andrea Bocelli playing throughout the entire house. With all these great memories I can truly say that their passion rubbed off and inspired me to embark on the career path that I have chosen. My Nona and my father are my two greatest role models for cooking, even before Gordon Ramsey.

As I have mentioned previously I have been cooking since I was a young child. Cooking is part of who I am and I have been doing so professionally for 6 years now. I have had the opportunity to work under some great chef’s throughout the years. I have experience in a variety of settings from breakfast to fast food to sushi.

Through my years of working in the culinary field, I found that I wanted more than to just work for someone else, I wanted to be my own boss and create my own menus. After turning down two culinary schools I decided that I wanted to branch off into business to better knowledge for this competitive world. I had so many ideas and recipes I wanted to share with the world.

I was tired of feeling confined by another companies boundaries, I wanted to be free. With this business course I hope that it will give me what I need to take that leap of faith. I am enthusiastic and absolutely committed to have a fully functional catering business running from home in the next few years. Further down the road investments into a food truck will help me build the capital I need to open a restaurant to call my own.
