Dr. Julia Hickey Somerville is a family doctor and the principal physician of a full-service practice in Parksville, British Columbia, Canada. Serving patients in Nanaimo and Parksville, she draws on almost three decades of medical experience in women’s health, geriatric care, and LGBTQ health. Additionally to her role as a family doctor, Dr. Julia Hickey Somerville serves on the staff of several medical facilities, including the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, the Stanford Place Care Campus, and the Trillium Lodge.

Prior to her current positions, Dr. Somerville served as a family doctor in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. There, she provided a range of medical services to the community from a practice with emergency and obstetrics services. She began her medical career in 1987 after earning her MD from Dalhousie University. After completing her internship and residency, she served for several years as a medical professional in Canada’s Armed Forces.

An active member of the global community, Dr. Julia Hickey Somerville supports Médecins Sans Frontières and the Red Cross. Closer to home, she is a longtime supporter of the Haven Society Nanaimo, which seeks to protect vulnerable people through the promotion of nonviolence, and Covenant House Vancouver, which provides shelter and opportunities for youth who are homeless. She also has hosted students from across the world as a volunteer host for Rotary International Youth Exchange.
