Julian Charles studied singing, conducting and composition at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the Royal College of Music. He has performed in major venues across Europe with notable ensembles, highlights of which include Haydn Die Schöpfung with the London Mozart Players; J. S. Bach Johannes-Passion BWV 245 with the London Handel Orchestra; Elgar The Dream of Gerontius with The Hamburg Symphony Orchestra; Handel The Messiah with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment; Elgar The Apostles with the BBC Concert Orchestra; J. S. Bach Cantata Ich habe genug BWV 82, Weihnachts-Oratorium BWV 248 and B Minor Mass BWV 232 with the Basel Baroque Ensemble; recitals of German Lieder, English Song and French Chanson at the Wigmore Hall, Oxford Lieder Festival, Chelsea Schubert Festival and the Christ Church Cathedral Recital Series. Recent roles include Oscar Barb-Bleu and Il Paggio Roberto Devereux at the Buxton Opera Festival; Colline La Boheme for Opera Project; Le Corporal La Fille du Regiment for Diva opera and at Les Azuriales Festival. He also sang Colline in the highly praised production at the Soho and Charing Cross Theatres which won both a Whatsonstage Award and an Olivier Award.

Future Engagements include Colline La Boheme at the Theatre Royal in Margate; Don Basilio Il barbiere di Siviglia for the Ramsgate Music Festival; Il Barone Douphol La Traviata for Opéra à la Carte; Gounod Romeo et Juliette with the Philharmonia Orchestra in the Royal Festival Hall; Verdi Macbeth with English National Opera and Philharmonia Voices; Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs with the Hill Singers.

Julian is the recipient of various awards. These include scholarships from the Wingate Foundation, the Brock Foundation, English Speaking Union and, most recently, the Musicians Benevolent Fund and the Royal Society of Musicians of Great Britain, for which he is extremely grateful. Julian has also been awarded scholarships to study on the Georg Solti Academia Bel Canto, London Masterclasses, Oxford Lieder Festival Master-course, Benslow Music Trust Baroque Opera Course and the Dartington International Summer School Advanced Opera Course.

As a singing teacher, Julian’s pupils have been awarded scholarships to the Royal Academy of Music; Manhattan School of Music; Curtis Institute of Music; New York University Conservatoire; Guildford School of Acting; Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, York and Manchester Universities.
