Growing up as a U.S. born citizen in a Hispanic family has been a unique experience for me and is something I do not take for granted. My family moved to the States from Venezuela when the political and economic situation was plummeting. At the time, my mother was pregnant with me and wanted to keep my two sisters and I in a safe environment. My dad was able to support us as he went to college in Louisiana and was able to make some money. While my family and I were not there for much of my extended family’s lives, it is a blessing that we are in Georgia. We have been living safely and healthily; my siblings received a good education and managed to earn their degrees, and now I am in the process of acquiring my degree. If we had stayed in Venezuela, many aspects of our lives would not have been nearly the same. There were less opportunities and it was a dangerous place to be. However, there have been times where I wish I could relate and connect with my family more, as I do not have the same experiences as they do. I am fluent in Spanish, but I am still not as close with my culture as others are. I have never found a Hispanic community that I can constantly talk to, until now. Coming into UGA, I immediately joined HSA, the Hispanic Student Association, where I have already made great memories. I hope to never lose my culture, in fact, I hope that in the future I will be more connected to it.
