For most of my life, running was my enemy—it was the punishment coaches handed out, the practice drill that I dreaded. If you had told me I’d be a runner 5 years ago, I would’ve thought you were out of your mind! Yet somehow, this sport I once avoided has now become a staple of my daily life.

I vividly remember the beginning of my running journey, where a single mile would leave me gasping for air in the summer heat, every step I took felt like hands clawing out of the earth, clinging tightly onto my ankles to hold me back. However, despite these difficulties, my spirit dug in its heels, I promised that I will not surrender to these harsh hills that rose before me. One mile became two. Two became three. Before long, I ran my first 5k! Running taught me the lesson that persistence can truly turn weakness into strength.

Soon, what began as a hobby has grown into competition—cross country. As our team stood nervously on the starting line with butterflies in our stomachs, it all disappeared when the gun cracked and the world went silent, our ears muffled with only pounding footsteps and ragged breaths. My coach once told me, “Running is training for life.” and I understood that deeply. Instead of staring at the finish line miles ahead, I focused on solely passing the closest runner. With each, small victories added up—just like in life, where every little goal carries us closer to our biggest accomplishments: the finish line.

Running has become my teacher, my discipline, and my joy. It gave me inseparable friendships and a mindset I’ll carry forever: the finish line isn’t conquered in a sprint, but in the persistence of every single step.
