From Candace's sister: Thank you for reading. The was vacated when at the last minute, the defense offered a plea bargain. Since I have attended every hearing and know all the details, I wanted to make sure the defendant didn't walk. It could have happened. He pled guilty to vehicular homicide, now a felon for the rest of his life. Unfortunately in Colorado, the absolute maximum for this case is 12 years in jail...Yes, twelve years. The plea bargain dropped it to 8 years maximum. The judge (new to the case as of this month) will determine punishment. She is known to be lenient, so we need you! Please contact me if you can write a letter to her about Candy and why the defendant needs the maximum sentence (still not enough for taking a life).

Sentencing at the Arapahoe County Justice Center (Arapahoe County District Court) on Monday, March 23 at 9am. Doors to the courthouse open each day at 7:30 a.m. When you enter, someone may ask you to identify yourself. Just say "Candace's friend." The person talking to you will most likely be my victim's advocate, Valarie Finks, who is working with the DA, Victoria Klingensmith. (Both have been wonderful throughout this whole process.) Because another prominent court case is in the process of jury selection, close-to-building parking is limited to early-birds. If you arrive after parking lots are full, officers will direct your to another place to park to take a shuttle bus to the courthouse. Enter the building and the line immediately on your left...lines can be long. Be prepared for airport-like security. There is an elevator just beyond the security checkpoint. You want to go to Room 407.

The defendant's entourage is hostile, mad at the police and mad at me. There are always at least 10 or so there--just me on Candy's side. I will speak, as well as Debbie S., Candy's store manager and friend. If you would like to address the judge, please let me know by March 1. If you do not want to speak, you can still write a detailed letter to the judge, which will be part of a packet the DA will give the judge prior to sentencing. Describe Candy, tell funny and poignant stories, tell the judge why you miss her and then tell the judge to render a maximum sentence. She likes to forgive mistakes, but the defendant ran from the police, deliberately turned off his lights and sped off at 70mph. If his lights were on, Candy would have been able to see him. I'm at: [email protected]. Thank you!
