Jen Wike Huger
Content Manager in Raleigh, North Carolina
At Red Hat, a leading open source software company, I'm the content manager for the media publication Opensource.com. The site shares stories about how people all over the world use open source software, hardware, and principles to live, work, and play. Email email@example.com to share a story idea with me.
I also write about life in Raleigh, North Carolina, where the downtown district has seen a boom and been reinvented. Where once only businessmen trod... today, a diverse group of people come to work and enjoy life downtown. My blog, DowntownDame.com, has been around since 2010.
Bottomline: I love content creation.
I also have an intense love for nature and getting crafty. I'm into working with herbs, fermenting kombucha and sauerkraut, and gardening my little plot "inside the beltline."
Past job fun facts: My first job out of college was with the super successful blast! PR. I once lived in Brooklyn where I worked at the infamous Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan. And, once upon a time my sister and I made handmade greeting cards for a small business we called Darling & Dear.
The hardest and in some ways most rewarding job I've ever had was for The NeighborWoods Program for the City of Raleigh--delivering, planting, and pruning trees for residents. We worked through the summer heat and winter cold, and I'm glad to say the program is still going today. Plus, I got a sweet pair of work boots and learned how to back up a truck with a trailer attached (not easy).
A few works I've helped create over the years:
Editor and co-writer with Shamsa Visone of A Community Garden Handbook (2014)
Technical editor for the book The foundation for an open source city by Jason Hibbets (2013)
Assistant Director of the short film Trust by Paul Sapp (2012)
