Kirsten Foti
Teacher and Ph.D. Student in Arlington, Texas
I have been teaching at the same junior high since 2002. I started my teaching career as a seventh grade English teacher, serving in this position for eight years. During this time, I taught different variations of the class - combined reading a writing, writing, reading - to students with special needs all the way through Pre-AP.
I then moved to eighth grade English when STAAR testing was introduced. I also taught READ 180 during this time. In addition, I served as our Texas Literacy Initiative grant and English as a Second Language coordinators.
After five years and three months, our campus AVID class was in need of a teacher, and having many years of AVID training, I was moved to assist with college prep as both the program elective teacher and coordinator.
Although I loved my role in AVID, fourteen months later, my campus was in need of a seventh grade English teacher and was struggling to find a qualified teacher. Rather than let our students fall behind, I offered to fill the void.
