My curiosity led me into the field of biomedical research and once there I immediately got captivated by the scientific problem solving and creativity.

During my career I have gradually moved from being a mainly experimental biomedical scientist to an emphasis on microbiology and bioinformatics. I have been using different sequencing techniques to study both the host and pathogen side of gastric cancer development; a cancer strongly associated with chronic infection of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. This little bug, living in the stomachs of half the world’s population, of which the vast majority will never notice that they are infected, came to fascinate me a lot and step by step this has become my research focus.
