Kalamu ya Salaam

New Orleans, Louisiana

Born 24 March 1947, Kalamu ya Salaam is a writer, educator, and cultural activist. He is a senior staff member of Students at the Center, a writing program in the New Orleans public schools. Kalamu is the moderator of Neo•Griot (kalamu.com/neogriot), an information blog for black writers and supporters of our literature worldwide.

His books include What Is Life? (a collection of essays) and The Magic of Juju - An Appreciation of the Black Arts Movement.

His recordings include My Story, My Song (poetry with a variety of New Orleans musicians) and the compilation A Nation of Poets (featuring Amiri Baraka, Pearl Cleage, Wanda Coleman, Mari Evans, Haki Madhubuti, Kalamu ya Salaam, Sonia Sanchez, Askia Muhammad Toure).

His movies include the drama Baby Love, and the documentaries Jackie Seal (domestic violence) and He's On His Way (New Orleans parade traditions).
