Kamal Shakur

A Leader, Guyanese born and raised by a single parent who instilled a strong work ethic, principles and values that make him in the man he is today.

He is also a single parent to three young sons who are his reason for living and succeeding. He is dedicated to being a great father and positive role model for his children.

He is humbled by this responsibility but understands how important it is that he be the best influence in the lives of his sons.

It was not part of his master plan to be a single parent but it was thrust on him early in 2014 when his wife of 10 years abandoned him and their children. Despite the overwhelming shock and pain he was able to summon up the strength to move forward and adjust to life on his own with his three sons.

Kamal was himself a product of a single parent home and he witnessed firsthand the difficulties in raising children in that environment. Early on, he knew that fatherhood was something he wanted but he also wanted to be a good husband. He has always been a man of strong convictions and faith and these characteristics have guided him through life.

As a young boy growing up in Guyana Kamal also knew entrepreneurship was going to be a part of his future. As a teenager he held several income generating events in his local community. He was also interested in giving back to the youth in the community and mounted several youth sport initiatives in the area in which he lived.

After a brief stay in the United Kingdom; where Kamal spent time with his father and paternal grandmother he returned to Guyana with his wife and first born. He was even more determined to start his own business than when he left and proceeded to do just that. The Capital city had a bid out for contracting services and Kamal was successful in garnering that bid. He knew precious little about the contracting business but he had a burning desire to succeed and he did. That small contract was the beginning of Kamal Shakur Contracting Services. For the next few years Kamal worked steadily to build his business and expanded it to include the city’s first drive through carwash.

Growth and development led Kamal to move his family to Canada where his wife had lived for years prior to marrying him. His first stop was Toronto but as Ontario was experiencing the first of several recessions, Kamal soon moved his family out west to Edmonton.

He joined the workforce initially and took care of his growing family. Within a few years of moving to Edmonton his family grew to include two additional sons. Kamal knew that the plan for his life did not simply include working a job but he wanted to build an empire.

Through the years there have been setbacks…the most challenging of all being the end of his marriage. Kamal has approached it all with grace and confidence that these are necessary lessons. He has remained focused and certain of success.
