Astrophysicist and Writer in Portland, OR

Read my book

I am an astrophysicist and writer, currently living near Portland, OR. My research initially focused on the magnetism of distant stars. Later, I increasingly studied the ever-changing atmosphere of the nearest star, our life-enabling Sun, and also the effects of solar magnetism on interplanetary space, on the planets, and on human technology (published in some 180 refereed research articles and books, as well as in popular science articles). My wife, a physician, and I together wrote “Living with the stars”, a book for general audiences about the connections between the human body and the Universe. The discovery of exoplanets and the unfolding of fascinating insights into distant worlds triggered my latest popular science book, “One of ten billion Earths: how we learn about our planet’s past and future from distant exoplanets”. My most recent book, "Immersion" is a work of science fiction about reality and consciousness.
