Karen Milford

I am a Paediatric Surgeon and Urologist practising at the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital in Johannesburg. I completed my undergraduate medical training at the University of Pretoria before moving to Cape Town. There I completed my internship and some adult general surgery time as a medical officer, before completing my training as a Paediatric Surgeon at the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital. I became a Fellow of the South African College of Paediatric Surgeons in 2017.

Most recently, I completed a clinical fellowship in Paediatric Urology at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. During my time there I had significant exposure to multiple urological conditions, and gained experience in the surgical management of hypospadias, undescended testes, congenital and acquired renal and ureteric abnormalities, genitourinary neoplasms and transplant. I also have special interest in the management of children with neurogenic bladders and posterior urethral valves.

Additionally, I care for children with general paediatric surgical conditions.

At Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital, we welcome referrals of children who do and do not have medical insurance. The hospital does not currently have an emergency department and so we discourage walk-ins. However, there is a paediatric surgeon on call at all hours and we are always happy to discuss both urgent and elective cases.
