Karl Uberla
Karl Überla has developed a long and accomplished career in the public health industry. Born in Germany in 1935, Karl Überla began studying medicine in Heidelberg, Innsbruck, Munich, and Freiburg Im Breisgau. In 1963, he received his Medical Degree from the University of Freiburg. There, he also studied psychology for five years and graduated in 1962. The following year, Karl Überla earned accreditation to practice medicine and psychology. While in the process of studying for his medical accreditation, Karl Überla accepted a position as Visiting Professor at the Laboratory of Personality Assessment and Group Behavior at the University of Illinois. Upon completion of his year abroad, he went back to Germany to further expand his research in human behavior through a Research Assistant position at the Institute of Medical Statistics at the University of Mainz, which he held until 1968. Karl Überla's dedication to this field earned him a Chair position for Medical Statistics, Documentation, and Data Processing at the University, where he stayed from 1968 to 1973. 1981 became a turning-point in Karl Überla's career when he was appointed to the role of President of the Federal Health Office in Berlin. Until 2005, he held various Chair positions in the fields of medical informatics, biometry, and epidemiology. A prolific researcher, Karl Überla published more than 500 articles in industry-specific publications. He has also maintained membership with organizations such as The International Biometric Society, the International Epidemiologic Association, the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), the Society for Clinical Trials, Gesellschaft für Medizinische Informatik, Biometrie und Epidemiologie e.V.
