Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812 , in Landport district , located in the city of Portsmouth, son of John Dickens and his wife Elizabeth Barrow . When the future writer was five, the family moved to Chatham , Kent. His mother was middle class and his father always dragged debts due to his excessive inclination to waste . In 1869 Dickens agreed to chair the Birmingham and Midland Institute , becoming its sixteenth president.
