Kate Batlin

Funding and Evaluation professional in Guildford, United Kingdom

During my time working at The Kings Fund, I have gained experience in applying the ideas behind "Theory of Change" models and Realistic Evaluation (Pawson & Tilley, 1997) to real life projects - mostly in the healthcare field.

I have experience in measuring and analysing whether projects have delivered the expected outcomes - giving an insight into potential impact. I can also help to design evaluations which focus on understanding the context in which the project operates and the mechanisms at work. This can give an insight into how and why the project works, or when things haven't gone to plan, it can offer valuable insights into why and what could be more effective.

I have several years experience in assessing grant applications and working with successful applicants. I feel very strongly that all applicants should be given an equal opportunity to demonstrate why they fit the criteria of a particular grants programme and value the time and effort people put into such applications.

I am able to offer support to both funders and those carrying out interventions, in the following ways:

- Assisting in honing terms such as 'quality of life' to understand what this means for particular beneficiaries

- Offering assistance with research to see what similar work has been carried out by others and what they learnt that might help others doing similar work

- Identifying a manageable data collection scope

- Identifying suitable data collection methods

- Assisting with data analysis

- Helping in the development of a 'theory of change'.
