With a strong ecological background from working as a field and research assistant for several ornithological researchers, Katharine is now working for the British Trust for Ornithology in their Cymru office (Wales) and as part of their Wetland and Marine Team.

She holds a PhD in ornithology and behavioural ecology and her thesis was titled "Predicting the effect of environmental change on biodiversity: insights from coastal bird models" which she undertook with Richard Stillman and Roger Herbert at Bournemouth University. Using Individual-based models she investigated the impact of environmental changes on wading birds populations in the UK. The results of this thesis will now assist in the decision making processes on estuarine habitats of coastal birds.
