Katheryn Shurley

After earning her Generalist EC-4 and her Special Education EC-12 certifications in May 2008, Katheryn Shurley worked with Meadowbrook Elementary in Waco, Texas. Employed as a Kindergarten Inclusion Teacher, Katheryn Shurley provided supplemental activities in the areas of math and language arts. She was recognized with the Silver Universal Literacy Award in 2009.

Prior to working with Meadowbrook Elementary, Katheryn Shurley served as a teacher’s aide at Victory Christian School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, from the fall of 1997 to the spring of 1999. In this role, she helped the schoolteachers maintain order in the classrooms, handled disciplinary actions, and assisted with classroom activities. She left the school in 1999 to earn her BS in Computer Information Systems. She graduated from DeVry University in Irving, Texas, in 2003. The next year, she took a job as a nanny in San Angelo, Texas, where she looked after three young boys between the ages of two and five. She was responsible for taking them to appointments, as well as engaging them in activities that developed their cognitive, physical, and motor skills.

Katheryn Shurley returned to school, this time at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. There, she maintained a 3.3 GPA and made the Dean’s List for five semesters. While attending school, Katheryn Shurley completed her student teaching at Austin Elementary in San Angelo, Texas. There, she worked with second-grade teachers, as well as a fifth-grade special education classroom. She employed the Herman Method to teach reading in her fifth-grade classroom, where she also tutored students in math. For her second graders, she utilized technology, as well as diverse learning strategies, to implement lessons in a cooperative classroom across all areas of the curriculum.

In addition to Katheryn Shurley’s teaching qualifications, she has also had several of her ideas and lesson plans featured on Diane deGroat’s website, under the Classroom Connections heading. Diane deGroat is a noted author and illustrator of children’s books.
