Kathleen Salyer PhD
Clinical Psychologist, Kathleen Salyer, prepared for her long and successful career when she enrolled at Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Maryland. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1965, and her Master's degree in Psychology, from the American University in Washington, D.C., in 1967.
That same year she began teaching Psychology as an Instructor of Psychology at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan. She taught courses in Introduction to Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Social Psychology, and Adolescent Psychology. During the 1970's, Kathleen Salyer was as a School Psychologist in the Fairfax County Public Schools and the District of Columbia Public Schools, where she evaluated children for physical, emotional and behavioral problems, supervised teachers in the use of classroom behavior management techniques and worked extensively with parents on parenting skills. From 1984 to 1995, she was a Senior Psychologist at Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute in Falls Church, Virginia, where much of her time was focused on working with patients diagnosed as borderline personality disorders. Drawing upon this experience, in more recent years, she presented workshops throughout the mid-Atlantic and parts of the mid-Western regions of the United States, sponsored by the American Healthcare Institute.
Dr. Salyer obtained her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The George Washington University in 1989. During her graduate career she taught on the undergraduate level and was a guest lecturer in a course at the graduate level. In 1992, Kathleen Salyer opened the doors to her private practice in McLean, Virginia, where she continues to treat families, and individuals for a wide range of psychological problems which include anxiety disorders, depression, work-related problems, relationship issues, borderline personality disorders, separation anxiety, attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and disruptive behavior disorders. One of her specialty areas is in helping parents strengthen their parenting skills with children who have issues with academic underachievement, inattention, focusing, and/or inappropriate behavior.
