Dogs are known for being man's best friend, and this statement reigns true for me. Growing up, my family owned a dog, but it eventually passed away when I was in middle school. The dog was a great part of my childhood, but I was too young to fully appreciate its presence. Early on during my freshman year of high school, my father became severely ill. Around that same time, we adopted a black lab that had failed out of hunting school and needed a new home. The dog, Belle, acted as a crutch during the hard times and a friend for both me and my father. Whether the days were good or bad, Belle would always be there wagging her tail, eager to please those around her. This sprouted my love and appreciation for dogs. They live to please and adore their owners wholeheartedly, and they are there through the ups and downs of life.

A dog is so much more than simply just a house pet. It is a loyal companion who loves unconditionally for their whole life. College has presented new challenges and stresses in my life from being away from home to studying for classes. Reuniting with my dogs over breaks or long weekends gives me the opportunity to remember the joy these creatures can bring into one's life. The stresses of college have influenced me to adopt a dog after the completion of spring semester for the constant stress relief and happiness its presence will bring into my life. It is also a chance for me to be able to provide an animal a safe and loving home. It will allow me to grow both in school and as a person.

The dog featured in the picture is Beau. A few weeks before finals last semester, my friend Allison and I took a trip to visit her parents and puppy for the weekend to relax. In a time of stress, Beau allowed for us to shift our attention to throwing the frisbee and playing soccer on the beach instead of only focusing on school work.
