Hi, my name is Kayla George and I'm a freshman here at UGA, but I wasn't born anywhere near Athens. In fact, I was born in Brooklyn, NY and lived there until I turned 7. That is when my mom decided we were moving to Atlanta, which wouldn't have been so bad if my dad weren't staying in New York. Over the years, it has been emotionally overwhelming going back and forth between the homes of my mom and dad who I love equally, but I don't regret my mom's decision considering all of the friends and memories I've made in Georgia. In fact, that's why I got a tattoo of Smyrna's city flower! It's my home and I love it here! There were some times which were harder than others though. My dad is a hard-working man and always has good intentions, which is why I could never stay mad at him, but growing up, sometimes his best wasn't enough. He always tried to be there for me during my special moments such as recitals, step shows, and graduations, but sometimes his promises which he tried so desperately to keep fell through. That is why I love this picture so much! My high school graduation one of my greatest achievements so far in life, and I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to have both of my parents standing beside me in that photo and cheering me on as I walked across the stage. The cords around my neck were for receiving the biliteracy seal, completing the IB art program, and for having a 4.4 GPA. I was so proud to wear them to show my dad that I've been working hard all of these years and to show both of my parents that their money spent on me is an investment!
