Karen Chichester began teaching before the idea of having computers in the classroom even existed (1979.) Her first classroom computer was a Commodore Pet. Now, she has Chromebooks at school and at home.
Beginning her 38th year in the classroom, (33rd at Monroe Jefferson High School Karen remains passionate about teaching, learning, and helping all of her students succeed. At Jefferson, she teaches English, special education, and serves as their Google Integration Specialist. She is know for the ability to troubleshoot tech issues, a snarky sense of humor, and the ability to drive her students nuts. She is that crazy teacher you were warned about.
Since she has clearly lost her mind, Karen is as Writing Club Adviser. Each November will find Karen and her students writing novels for National Writing Month. While some of her students have published their work, Karen has no plans to publish because "I write novels with plot holes big enough to drive a truck through."
A Google for Education Certified Trainer, Karen loves to share share her passion for helping students learn. Even as she nears retirement, she continues to seek out new opportunities to learn and improve her craft.
Her ultimate goal is to develop her side hustle, MacChyver Tech.com, into a quality source for professional development.
Karen is a National Writing Project Teacher Consultant for the Eastern Michigan Writing Project.
Karen lives in suburban Detroit with her ever patient husband and their adult son who has Asperger's Syndrome.
In her albeit limited spare time, Karen can usually be found on Twitter (@kchichester) and Facebook, cultivating her geeky, fan-girl image, riding her bike, or reading novels with no socially redeeming value. She is a member of Alpha Gamma Delta International Women's Fraternity.
