Passions are enthusiastic feelings we get when we think of a topic, hobby, or person that excites us as individuals. My name is Katlyn Durrence and I am passionate about helping kids through education and in areas of basic needs. For most of my life I have loved ministering and caring for children through babysitting and VBS activities at local churches back home in Savannah, Ga. About three years ago, a family friend reached out to me for help with her adopted daughter who was struggling in school. Every Monday afternoon I would help Daisy study her spelling with different letter games, practice her times tables with flashcards, and study over her readings for school. Although homework is not anyone’s favorite activity and Daisy utterly despised math, the highlight of my week was getting to see her and witness the light bulb going off in her head when she understood a topic or concept. My job was to make sure she understood the ideas in different subjects and to innovate practices that would make learning fun for her in ways she could understand. Getting to see that same light bulb spark off in a classroom five days a week is one reason I am interested in a career in education.
