We are two engineering students from the Technical University of Denmark; Thea studies Biotechnology and Cecilie studies Materials science.

We are developing a sustainable fiber with the great material properties of wool, but without animal cruelty and with a low environmental impact.

Wool is a natural fiber that has been utilized by humans for thousands of years, due to its fantastic material properties: it’s multi-climatic and breathable, it’s durable, it’s easy to care for and it’s a great insulator - even when wet!

But as we all know wool is produced by sheeps, and this has consequences. An incredible amount of resources is used in the production process: think of the feed, water and land masses needed. And then consider the greenhouse gases produced.
In fact studies show that wool has an environmental impact twice as bad as the plant fiber made from hemp.

In addition to this, there will unfortunately always be ethical concerns about the welfare of the animals, when using livestock for production. Horrible practices, such as mulesing, are common in the wool industry and there is a rapid expansion in the group of consumers - including vegans - who want to avoid this.

Despite the downsides, wool is a great material and this is what we want to tap into. By combining our skills we are re-inventing wool and developing a novel fiber, based on renewable resources, with amazing material properties - but without animal cruelty and with a much lower environmental impact.

Currently we are conducting research to gather information about various existing fibers and technologies as well as specifying the properties of our material.
