Kellie Story

Student and Hostess in Charlotte, North Carolina

Hi, I’m Kellie. I am 21 years old and was born in Lexington, North Carolina. Right now, I’m a junior at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte pursuing my Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Organizational Management. Currently I am a hostess at Boardwalk Billy's LLC, which is a restaurant located just behind the campus.

One academic project that I created in my college career was my sophomore year at my community college in my English class. Our instructions were to find an author from the 1900s and to write a paper and do a presentation about them. For that particular project, I chose an amazing woman named Lucille Clifton. She was an African American poet who used past events in her life to fuel her poetry. She won many awards including the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize and the National Book Award for Poetry. She passed away in 2010.

One extra-curricular project that I participated in was actually my Gold Award for Girl Scouts. The project took place my senior year in high school (2013-2014) and I was expected, by the Girl Scout committee, to plan and lead a type of project that would last a lifetime and not just for the duration of the project. The project was required to be at least 80 hours. For my project, I decided that I would essentially build a prayer path beside my church's cemetery that led into a prayer garden. Fellow members of the church were given the opportunity to purchase bricks that would be constructed into the prayer path with whatever saying they wanted on them. For example, if one of their family members were buried at our church cemetery they could have their brick engraved with "Rest In Peace" and then their family member's name. Through this project I learned life skills that would carry me on for the rest of my life such as leadership skills, communication skills, and time management skills. I chose to do this project for my church because the members of the congregation are a second family to me and they deserved a great addition that everyone can enjoy. Also through this project I learned that hardly anything ever goes as planned, but that's when you have to apply what you've learned and adapt to it. If I could go back and do anything differently it would definitely be better use of my time. The project took way longer to complete than I thought it would because of procrastination.
