My professional life began after college when I accepted a fellowship with the State of California. I worked on various state policies related to the Dept. of Food and Agriculture, working under for Governor Pete Wilson and Governor Gray Davis.
After my fellowship, I began a career in journalism, working primarily at smaller news organizations. Working as part of a small staff, I was often called upon to do things sports writers aren't often tasked with, such as shooting my own photos and developing my own prints in a dark room. I learned layout and design by necessity. I became familiar with the business element out of necessity. I covered fire, police, military, city and school news out of necessity.
Opportunities arose over the years to be involved with writing for the web, being a frequent guest on an area TV and co-hosting a weekly radio show.
I have, as a result, a much broader range of skills than most sports writers, general reporters and editors. I'm very adaptable, very flexible and I thrive in an environment driven by pressure and deadlines.
When not at work, I'm an obsessed sports fan. I learned the rules for sports like hockey, rugby and soccer by watching games on TV repreatedly until I simply understood them. I watch the major sports, but I also watch racing, Australian Rules Football, curling, volleyball and anything else claiming itself to be a sport.
I began playing baseball when I was five and I've been involved in sports ever since. In fact, I've been involved with baseball that entire time, having been a player, a coach, an umpire, a league coordinator, a grounds crew member, I've sold concessions, cleaned bathrooms, raked leaves, swept floors and done nearly everything else that goes into a baseball game. I love most sports but I have a great passion for baseball and my favorite thing in life is helping others wake up their own passion for the game.
Sports aside, my one non-sports hobby is script writing. My education background is writing. More specifically, it's creative writing. I studied all of the great authors, poets and playwrights of the last 7-800 years. I enjoy writing as a hobby but I've found I can really only express my story ideas effectively as different types of scripts, be they for TV, film or stage. I've loosely pursued the career in the past and have done so more seriously recently. Overall, it remains one of my few non-sports hobbies.
