Kelvin Syms

A prominent figure in the New Zealand financial planning industry for over two decades, Kelvin Syms presently operates an investment firm providing advisory services to companies. The firm invests in the recruitment, construction, export, and technology industries. Two start-up building and export enterprises in which he has invested have experienced exceptional growth. Mr. Syms participates in all aspects of the business by attending meetings, identifying potential opportunities, performing risk analysis, rendering business advice, mentoring, and serving on company boards.

In 2006, Kelvin Syms sold his financial services company, Vestar Ltd. (previously Northplan Financial Services Ltd.), which he founded in 1991 in conjunction with a legal firm. Northplan experienced widespread success, growing from a team of four to a countrywide staff of 75, with offices in Auckland City, Albany, Mt. Maunganui, Kerikeri, Cambridge, Rotorua, Hawera, Christchurch, Dunedin, Queenstown, Invercargill, and Whangarei. Northplan served a clientele of predominantly high net-worth individuals. As the company’s Director, Mr. Syms managed daily operations, provided oversight of client funds, conducted risk analysis, researched securities, managed investment portfolios, and performed legal compliance activities.

Kelvin Syms earned a diploma in Business Studies at Massey University in Auckland. He began his career in the banking industry at the National Bank of New Zealand, where he was one of the youngest people promoted to the level of Accountant. In his next position, he managed a firm of solicitors. The practice expanded into the mortgage business, where Mr. Syms oversaw the new entity. He gained extensive experience in researching investments, analyzing risk, and managing portfolios. The firm later entrusted Kelvin Syms to establish a financial services company where clients could invest in securities.

Kelvin Syms participates in The Breakfast Club at the Auckland University of Technology, which the school organized to promote networking and mentoring between the business community and students. He is a supporter of Mercy Hospice, a charitable organization providing a range of services to persons facing life-threatening illnesses. An avid golfer, Mr. Syms spends much of his leisure time at the Mangawhai Golf Club or at The Grange Golf Club.
