“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” - Confucius
Ministry, at its core, is a response to God. It is an admission that you get God's story, that you buy into the unfolding narrative, and that you want to be part of it. Vocational ministry is an admission that there is nothing else into which you can invest your life that brings you greater personal satisfaction and reward. Ministry says to God, I see what you're doing and though I'm not exactly sure what comes next, I want to be a part of it.
"No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it." - Albert Einstein
Rightly done, ministry should be a confession that the sin problem cannot be solved by the people who caused it. Ministry admits that something is wrong and that God is the only one who knows the solution. Ministry is a daily confession that we need God to work through us to do what only he knows needs to be done.
"There is one God and we're not him." - Me
I believe the Bible is a revelation of God to creation. I believe what I can understand vastly outweighs what I can't. I believe God is three persons in a single essence. I believe I'll never be able to explain that more concisely but I believe that because God has revealed it, we can believe it. I believe that I shouldn't expect something to be untrue just because I can't fully understand it. I believe my thinking should be shaped by what God has revealed, not the other way around. I believe that Jesus is God, the promised Savior and solves the sin problem. I believe we live forever by putting our faith in him. Just faith - it's that simple - there is nothing we can add. I believe there's work to do, but not to earn salvation. That's a gift. Period. I believe Jesus sent the Spirit of God to his people to continue the restorative work he began, just as he promised (Jn 14, 16). I believe the Spirit of God works in and through those who desire to be shaped more like Jesus, more like the people we were always intended to be - before sin. I believe the church is God's change agent today.
More eloquent statements include the Nicene Creed or the Apostles Creed (derived from Nicea). They got it right.
