Kent Miller

Kent Miller earned an associate degree in photography from the Visual Communications department of the Columbus Region of Ivy Tech Community College in 1980. He went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in applied science from the University of Michigan-Flint, then received a master’s degree in communication and multimedia from Saginaw Valley State University in University Center, Michigan.

He now holds the position of Assistant Professor of photojournalism and new media at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Previous, to this position, he served as staff photographer at Indiana University’s Audio Visual Center, at The Flint Journal, at The Bloomington Herald Times, and the photo editor at The Bay City Times. He was also an adjunct professor of photography at Delta College in University Center, Michigan, and adjunct professor of photography at Ivy Tech Community College – Columbus Region.

Miller’s photography has been published in numerous magazines including, Nat Geo France, Germany’s View Magazine, England’s Loaded Magazine, Australia’s The Who Weekly, Newsweek, People and Playboy; in newspapers, including USA TODAY, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and The Detroit Free Press; and in books including America 24/7 and Lonely Planet’s Alaska.

Over the course of his career, Kent has won over 40 international, national and state awards for his photography from organizations including National Geographic, The Wilderness Society and the Michigan Press Photographers Association. In 2009, Kent competed and won The Pure Michigan Professional Photo Contest after a four-month shootout competing with ten national professionals. Elements of Kent’s photographs were used by the U.S. Mint for the tail side design for Alaska’s America the Beautiful United States quarter, which will be released later this year.

Kent’s photography has been presented in numerous photographic exhibitions including Ivy Tech’s Exceeding Expectations Alumni Exhibition in 2009.

His latest photographic project took place in several of Alaska’s national parks. Kent offered his services as a volunteer photographer during four trips to Alaska. His work is used prominently by the parks on their website, in books, posters and brochures. In all, he donated more than 4,000 photographs.
