A former junior high school English teacher, Kevin Luke Murphy earned his juris doctor from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law and clerked for Judge William O. Bertelsman in the United States District Court in the Eastern District of Kentucky before embarking on a successful career as an attorney in a law firm. . He went into business for himself in 1988 as the owner of Kevin L. Murphy & Associates in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky.
After operating this firm for 18 years, he left to serve nine years as of counsel with the firm of Graydon Head & Ritchey LLP in Cincinnati, Ohio. His accomplishments during this period included winning a $100 million verdict in one of the largest fraud cases in US history. He subsequently returned to his own practice,starting Murphy Landen Jones, PLLC. A current fellow of the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, he holds active membership in the American Bar Association, the Kentucky Bar Association, and the Ohio Bar Association.
