Every once in a while life will surprise you and sweep you off your feet, and when it does it with music, shaping both sensitivity and talent, all one can do is grow wiser and better by the day. For Kevin "KJ" Jones that same life seemed to be filled with sounds and notes he could feel and play at a very early age, and while listening to the old Blues and Jazz records his family played regularly at home he tapped his tiny feet to the rhythm and his uncle Walker taught him to keep time on the snare drum. He was only three years old, growing up in Memphis, Tennessee. Once in Junior High he continued to play drums and improved his craft, performing in several competitions and earning the trophy for "Best Jazz Drummer". Music had bigger plans for him though, and it didn’t take long for KJ to notice that he wanted to learn more, and found himself playing the trombone for the marching band. That, believe it or not, was just the beginning: the bass guitar and keyboards were waiting around the corner. He still remembers High School today as a time in his life where all he really wanted to do was play music. By the time he felt comfortable with a bass guitar on his hands and melodies would flow like water from his keyboard, KJ realized that he could have absolute control of his music by playing all of the instruments and recording his own material. Unlike other new artists, KJ didn’t seek the shade of well known, familiar sounds; instead, he worked towards the most valuable goal any artist can dream of: to find his own voice. The year 2000 brought him the inquisitive need of learning how to play yet one more instrument: the alto saxophone. Its vibrato dazzled him; the long tones of the smaller brother of the tenor saxophone were the perfect addition to his life musical journey, and he taught himself to play it and play it right. While the six string bass guitar remains at the center of his creative, improvising energy, his music continues to be rich in colors and textures, where keyboards, drums, sax and synthesizers will take turns to channel the melodies that keep coming from his heart. Jazz rests at the very core of his geniu
