Cheap plastic is manufactured from chemicals used in fuel production. In the process of refining crude oil, ethane is produced as a byproduct. A decade ago, fracking (hydraulic fracturing of oil or gas) made plastic raw materials much cheaper.

So-called “green” plastic items, such as packaging films and bottles, are made from ethane, which is then converted into ethylene. Frackaging, as sociologist Rebecca Altman describes it, is a flood of cheap plastic wrapping on grocery shelves.

Few facilities worldwide can efficiently dispose of or recycle this type of plastic. They are costly to set up and manage, and there is limited demand for the recovered material. While packaging is the main source of plastic demand, most of it is immediately discarded, with one third predicted to be incinerated or dumped. Much of it ends up in the environment.
