I'm an independent consultant, speaker, writer and trainer. My software development interests, contributions and work with companies covers programming, practice and people.

I'm a contributor to the Modern Software Engineering YouTube channel. I co-authored A Pattern Language for Distributed Computing and On Patterns and Pattern Languages, two volumes in the Pattern-Oriented Software Architecture series, edited 97 Things Every Programmer Should Know and co-edited 97 Things Every Java Programmer Should Know. I'm a former columnist for various magazines and websites, including the Register.

I also write short fiction, with a particular emphasis on flash fiction, and perform at spoken word events. I've been an event organiser for National Flash Fiction Day, the Bristol Festival of Literature and the Flash in Hand open mic evening in Bristol.
