People always say it is easy to talk about you and most conversations go that way. I guess they are right, but where do I start? I will receive my bachelor’s degree in journalism with an emphasis in magazines and minor in theatre from the University of Georgia in 2014. My journalism classes have trained me to be meticulous, dedicated and curious, and my theatre classes taught me the importance of effective communication and teamwork. Many people ask “why a theatre minor?” It is a passion of mine and it provides an outlet that writing does not. To some people that sounds like a nightmare, being under hot lights with a room of 200 plus people staring at you, but for me it is a rush.
My parents always told me to do what I love. That may be why I have entirelytoo many hobbies. Photography, blogging, singing, dancing, theatre, crafting, wakeboarding, volunteering… the list goes on. I have never been one to choose just one thing. I wear many hats but they keep me going.
I love to read. John Green, George R.R. Martin, and Harper Lee are some of my favorite authors. Pop culture is my weakness.
In ten years I hope to be writing…for anything. My ultimate dream is to produce for a news program like “60 Minutes” or “CBS Sunday Morning.” Who knows, I may even end up in Hollywood where most of my unlikely dreams lay. I just know that like Will McAvoy (of The Newsroom) I am on “a mission to civilize.” I want the media to make a difference and no longer be distrusted. I want to make a difference.
I enjoy so much, which is why learning to write makes so much sense. Scriptwriting, non-profit, freelance, foreign correspondence, and film are just a few fields that I would love to work in. Graduation is terrifying. With every “So what’s next?” I freak out a little more. However, I am confident that I will find a path because everything happens for a reason. In the words of William Shakespeare, “It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.”
