Kim Bott

Sydney, Australia

I like "little" things like planets and brown dwarfs. I'm interested in what their atmospheres are like and how they are formed.

I use visible light and infrared spectra and photometry, as well as polarimetry, to compare to radiative transfer models that I create. Combining these tools helps me to characterise the planets we find orbiting other stars (exoplanets). I want to know about the variety of worlds and so far it looks like planets come in all sorts of weird flavours.

When I'm not doing research I am often doing outreach. I love working with any age group and background, and I'm especially interested in making science more exciting for teens.

I am an acryllic and watercolour painter; a PADI Advanced Scuba Diver; a baker of cakes and cookies; an imbiber of fine coffee, stouts, whiskey and gin; a writer of trippy sci-fi; and a dancer of ballet, hula and a bit of tango.
