Over a decade ago, after the pregnancy and birth of my oldest child, I began to explore maternal infant wellness. I took a keen interest in the idea of community and the care of mothers and their babies. As our family grew, I continued exploring and learning more about these topics. My interest in this led me to become a La Leche League Leader. During this time, I pursued becoming an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and a doula. I retired from the La Leche League after volunteering for 7 years. Shortly after, I began instructing Childbirth Education at the YWCA. Having had 4 children of my own, I have an appreciation for differing pregnancies, births, care providers and postpartum experiences.
During the last 6 years I have been an active doula in Regina, and have also attended births in Moose Jaw and Yorkton.I have gained experience in many areas, including but not limited to hypnobirthing, precipitous births, at home births and in hospital births (c-sections, VBAC’s & inductions included). With each birth I witness, I am honoured and become even more changed. Through my experience of each birth attended, I have been able to put together bits and pieces of what I was witnessing, things that have lead to the satisfaction, comfort, enjoyment, ease, and relaxation of the experience , regardless of how the birth unfolded.
Birth is a unique relationship between mother and baby. In those moments a new life is being brought earthside, while those already here, most notably mothers & fathers, are transformed - forever changed and touched by the new life and experience. It is in that moment that everyone deserves to be treated compassionately and respectfully, and to honour the sacred moment it is with baby knowing it is welcomed and that much love is waiting for him/her.
I am an active advocate in growing maternity services in the province. Such as midwifery through advocacy groups like Where's My Midwife, breast-feeding supports with the Breastfeeding Committee of Saskatchewan, and partnering with Calgary’s Mother’s Milk Bank for human milk donations. I also sit on a variety of committees and boards regionally, provincially and nationally.
