In a lorry vs cyclist accident, Kirsten broke both her ankles. femurs and pelvis. She also broke her left tibia, fibula, and shoulder. After 19 operations in 6 months and without any points of reference to guide her rehabilitation, she is still exploring her physical limits everyday.
A year and a week to the day of her accident, she walked 10 hours to complete a marathon. She has also swam 6.4km, completed a DIY biathlon and a DIY triathlon, cycled 100km on an indoor trainer, ran 5km amongst many other physical accomplishments.
With a new appreciation for life and sports, she regularly shares her experiences throughout this journey of her come back at public speaking engagements.
She is currently pursuing a PhD in Sports Psychology where she intends to investigate the psychophysiological aspects of sport injury rehabilitation. Her other main preoccupation sees her training and fund raising for a triathlon fund-raising event for Ataxia Telangiectasia Society in the UK. In her spare time, she writes about the life experiences and lessons that have helped her overcome the biggest setback of her life yet. This writing is hoped to be published by June 2013.
