During my freshman year at UGA, I was completely lost and had no idea what I was doing on campus. I signed up for random social events and hoped that one of them would help me find my place. Fortunately, it didn’t take long for me to discover a community that I truly connected with, volunteering.
As a student whose about to enter his sophomore year. I’ve spent most of my time as a student volunteering for events whenever I have free time. It allows me to connect with multiple communities and give back. I’ve met many professors and like-minded students who share the same passion for service and community engagement.
One of my most memorable experiences was participating in UGA’s Spring IMPACT trip. During the five-day trip to Augusta, our student volunteer partnered with local nonprofit organizations and volunteered throughout the city. Not only did I have the opportunity to meet members of the Augusta community, but I also formed connections with fellow UGA students.
The trip was significant because it was my first time going on a long trip with strangers I’ve never met. I was unsure of what to expect. However, it was one of my most rewarding decisions. The experience taught me a lot and opened a lot of opportunities for me.
So, as I continue my tenure as a UGA student, I hope to continue volunteering and meeting people from different communities.
