Kris Lopez

Artist, Writer, and Consultant in New York

Kristina Maria Lopez received her B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Studio Art from Hunter College where she studied with Roy DeCarava, Malik Gaines, and Nari Ward. Her research interests aim to understand how race continues to be used as a medium of understanding and categorization.

Her first book, "A Report to an Academy: Animality and Display" analyzes speciesism as a predecessor to racism. She has written blog posts, magazine articles, and catalogue entries on artists for The Studio Museum in Harlem and shaped content for the Black Contemporary Art Tumblr from 2012-2013. In addition to her studio practice she has curated independent exhibitions, participated in panels, and taught art. Her work has been exhibited at the BMHC, El Museo del Barrio, and the Queens Museum of Art.

Kristina has worked for the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the New-York Historical Society in a variety of roles. She curated programming on the work of Thomas Bayrle over the course of 6 months as a Research Fellow at The Artist's Institute. She is the Founder and Director of An Assembly, a publishing platform for emerging thinkers dedicated to engaging in critical discourse around race and culture.
