Koen Magnus
Student in Athens
My name is William Koen Magnus, but I go by Koen. I am eighteen years old and a first year student at UGA. Freshman year of high school I decided to quit soccer, the sport I had been playing since I was four years old, and wrestle. It was a very difficult decision, but soon became one of the best decisions in my life. Wrestling is a grueling sport that requires every ounce of you physically and mentally. There were several times that I wanted to quit wrestling because of how mentally draining and exhausting it was. Practices were five days a week and 3 hours long. They were non stop and pushed you to the point of passing out. The only reason I suck with wrestling all four years of high school is because of the feeling after you win a match. It is a feeling like no other. Once you get your hand raised you know that all of the hard work and determination you put in finally paid off. The days of not eating and losing weight finally paid off. All of the struggle and failure finally paid off. Wrestling taught me self discipline and gave me an incredible work ethic. In the famous words of Dan Gable “once you've wrestled, everything else in life is easy.”
