Kimberly Pogrant
Sterling, Kansas
Once upon a time 23 years ago a little girl was born in Phoenix, Arizona on January 5th. Her parents were Patrick and Jill Pogrant and they are awesome! I was that little girl, they named me Kimberly Mary. My entire family lives in the Wisconsin/Michigan area so I didn’t grow up with any family in Arizona. I didn’t mind it, it meant we took a ton of family vacations to visit everyone there. Couple years after I was born, my mom and dad gave me a little brother, Jeffrey Patrick. Growing up we fought like… brothers and sisters! Our family was perfect, I had my mom and dad, my little brother and our dog. Our family was pretty great, we did lots of traveling, communicated well and had a happy home. So why I decided to move out is beyond me. But, I was 18 and I decided to leave. See, my parents have a non-revolving door policy. They warned me that if I leave, it’s for good, none of that moving in and out stuff. I moved out with my boyfriend, wasn’t a good idea. Growing up in a very Catholic home, my parents were… what’s a good word for this situation? Disappointed! It was a great 3 years, but we grew apart so I moved out and got my own home! I was definitely a big girl now. With those big girl responsibilities, came big girl bills. It got really hard juggling school and work, I ended up dropping out of school to bartend full time. Man, the money was great and I had so much fun every day at work. Then, the man of my dreams walked in. No, he wasn’t a patron, he was the new bar back. I guess you can say it was love at first sight… for me. It took me a while to crack this one but eventually we ended up dating and now were totally getting married! Long story short: he came to Sterling on a soccer scholarship, we did one year of long distance, I followed him to Sterling to play softball and get my butt back in school, and he’s made me a better person. Since I’ve been here at Sterling, I’ve meet very many different people, I’ve learned a lot about myself and I’m in it for the long haul, there’s not quitting now. I miss my family every single day. My parents are empty nesters, living the honeymoon life all over again. My brother is now married and they are expecting their first baby this October!
