Kathryn-Lynn Raskina
Hello there! How is it going? My name is Kathryn-Lynn Raskina. I am a first-year journalism student at Ryerson University. Journalism has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I cannot imagine a world without news. I feel that even though I may not be able to directly help someone who is suffering throughout the world at least I can know about it.
This year, I had two articles published with McClung's magazine, a feminist magazine based out of Ryerson. Check out the one I wrote on human trafficking at http://mcclungs.ca/tag/canada-trafficking/ . I also on the executive team that organized Ryerson's Next Top Speaker competition. As a member of the team, my job was to coach the speakers. This entailed working one-on-one with them to help them improve their public speaking skills. It was an incredibly rewarding experience.
The highlight of my experience in the field of journalism consists of volunteering at my local newspaper, The Markham Economist and Sun. At that paper I got the opportunity to write several briefs as well as conduct two interviews and have published two freelance articles. I also published four letters to the editor. In high school, I also dabbled in journalism. I was the head of announcement team, the founder and president of my school's first speech club, and the editor of the school newspaper. I love writing about international affairs and entertainment. I have learned however that my talent truly lies in opinion columns. I therefore hope to one day work in the editorial department of a reputable newspaper.
For now, I work as a teller at Scotiabank. My favorite part of my job is that I get to meet new and interesting people every day.
This brings us to my favorite activity: talking to people. I love meeting new people and learning about their unique stories and experiences.
When my nose is not stuck in a book or a newspaper, I am doing one of 5 things:
1. Spending time with my family
2. Listening to country music- I love Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley. I am seeing Brad this summer and I am so excited:)
3. Working out at the gym
4. Baking-even though I am horrible at it
or
5. Watching a television drama- I adore Grey's Anatomy and The O.C.
So there you have it- me in less than 2000 characters.
Take care,
Kathryn-Lynn Raskina
