Educator and writer Karen Stewart-Ross is working on a book about her granduncle, notable Texas blues pianist Buster Pickens, called The Blues Within: The Biography of Edwin Goodwin "Buster" Pickens™. Stewart-Ross is also a contributing author to the book, Slavery's Descendants: Shared Legacies of Race and Reconciliation (Rutgers, 2019).

Her uncle Buster, who is designated by the Texas Office of the Governor as a music pioneer, is a celebrated blues pianist and vocalist. He accompanied fellow friends and iconic blues artists Lightnin' Hopkins and Alger "Texas" Alexander and his relative Leon Benton.

He was the sole sibling of Stewart-Ross' grandmother, Madgie Gladiola "Gladys" Pickens Benton Hill, who was also a gifted pianist. He is featured in the 1963 music documentary, On the Road Again, and in, among other texts, Blues Who's Who: A Biographical Dictionary of Blues Singers by Sheldon Harris, The Guinness Encyclopedia of the Blues, The Guinness Who's Who of the Blues, and Conversations with the Blues: A Documentary of Field Recordings by famed music historian Paul Oliver.

From conceptualizing radio show topics that bring to the air a high-powered D.C. attorney who strategically navigates through northern Nigeria to rescue girls from the grip of Boko Haram to interviewing fearless women who inspire women and girls in regions like the Sudan and Haiti to live boldly, Stewart-Ross is motivated by the untold story.

Stewart-Ross is an engaging and analytical writer, educator, and motivator who is passionate about God, history, justice, and the critical lessons learned in each season of life.
