Kathryn Ulmer
Teacher in Los Angeles, California
I have taught ESL, MS and HS French, 6th grade Histoire-Géo, and held various administrative positions in France and America. I have also been fortunate enough to spend time working with educators and educational groups focused on empowering locals in Haiti and Cambodia.
In French class, we love stories and having fun, and will weave Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr. Who, Legos and Stromae into every lesson we can! We also love to explore technology's power to transform learning; it offers more individualized instruction, better tools to help students with learning differences and brings instruction to people in places struggling to find the education they need, which are all strong interests of mine.
A New England native, I went to spend a gap year in France, which lasted 13 years! During that time, I attended the Université de Nice, where I earned a BA (License) in Linguistics and two M.Ed (Maîtrise) degrees in FLE and ESL. I also passed the CAFEP exam, the teacher certification given by the French Ministère de l'Education Nationale, and taught in Cannes at the prestigious Institut Stanislas. After spending half of my life in France, my family and I moved to America in 2008. Before taking on my current role as a French teacher and Chair of the World Languages Department at Milken, I was the Assistant Head of School and Head of Middle School at the San Diego French American School in La Jolla.
