Anna Kunnas

Who am I?

I am a Community Education student at Humak University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki, specializing in NGO and youth work. During my studies, I have developed my professional competence especially in NGO work, youth work, communication, project management, leadership, inclusion and community development.

I have been an active Scout for over 20 years and currently serve as the communications officer for my Scout troop. My responsibilities include social media, member communication, event communication and other digital communications. Scouting has given me extensive practical experience in volunteering, teamwork, leadership, organizing activities and working with children, young people and adults.

I also volunteer as a peer tutor with HERO (Helsingin seudun erilaiset oppijat ry). Through my studies and volunteer work, I have become particularly interested in youth education, human rights, equality, accessibility, participation and the development of NGOs and communities.

Background and Skills

My professional background combines practical vocational skills, working life experience, volunteering and Community Education.

Before my current studies, I completed two vocational qualifications at Stadin Ammatti- ja aikuisopisto: Interior Building & Upholstery and Fashion Sewing (Textile & Clothing). These studies developed my creativity, practical problem-solving skills, attention to detail and ability to plan and complete projects.

An important early experience for me was Nuorisotyöpaja Sininen Verstas, where I spent one autumn semester working with fabric printing. I was the youngest participant in the group. The experience introduced me to the importance of youth work and showed me how practical and creative activities can support young people and create a sense of community.

After my vocational studies, I worked as an Interior Builder at Laatulattiat Uusimaa Oy and as a telemarketer at Voicemarketing Oy. Alongside my studies, I have also occasionally worked as a personal assistant at Karun-Palvelut Oy. These different working environments have strengthened my communication skills, adaptability and ability to work with different people.

Professional Development

During my Community Education studies, my professional identity has become clearer. I have developed competence in project management, leadership, digital communication, sustainable development, ethical practice, workplace well-being and working in diverse communities.

My studies, internships and volunteer experiences have also taught me to connect theoretical knowledge with practical situations. For example, working as a Scout camp director during my second internship gave me practical experience in project management and in leading both adults and my peers.

I have also become more aware of my own strengths and learning methods. I now understand better how I learn, how I can adapt my learning environment and how I can use different digital tools to support my studies and professional work.

Motivation and Future

I am studying to become a Community Educator because I want to work with people and communities and contribute to meaningful work in NGOs and youth organizations.

I am particularly interested in work where I can combine NGO and youth work, communication, project management, development, inclusion and community building. My previous vocational background, long experience in Scouting, volunteer work and Community Education studies give me a diverse combination of practical and professional skills.

As I approach the end of my studies, I see myself not only as a student and volunteer but as a developing professional who can take responsibility, lead projects, work collaboratively and contribute to the development of organizations and communities.
