Kurt Barrie

Kurt Barrie

Born in Auburn California in April 1966 Kurt quickly found an interest in art and entertainment. Always a character Kurt would create plays that he would act out with friends for amusement, or would paint and draw pictures of people for money. Later he found a passion in politics which has been his personal career direction for the past 23 years. In 1989 Kurt attended a function where he met volunteers gathering signatures for a ballot initiative called Yes on S (the Domestic Partners Initiative) which lost that year, but gained its newest advocate that went on to run the succesful 1990 Yes on K ballot initiative in SF to pass the controversial Domestic Partners law by the voters, He won that campaign in the Historic election, only to be confronted with a rightwing attempt the following year (1991) to repeal the initiative. In a landslide election Barrie's efforts to prevent the repeal were succesful, but his efforts also helped add two Democratic lesbian candidates to the Board of Supervisors, a gay Democrat to the School Board and a openly gay man (democrat) to the College Board in the historic Lavendar sweep in San Francisco. Barrie went on to work for Supervisor Harry Britt for several years as a legislative Aide. Supervisor Britt was initially appointed to fill the remainder of slain Supervisor Harvey Milks seat, Milk (the first openly gay man elected in the Country was killed by another SF Supervisor Dan White who resigned his position on the Council only to later request the Mayor appoint him back to that same seat. When the Mayor declined he shot and killed both Mayor a nd Supervisor in the notorious twinkie defense case. Barrie was Vice President of the Harvey Milk Democratic Club and went on to become the founder of the Palm Springs Democratic Club. He was elected to a two year term on the Riverside County Central Committee and won a seat on the 80th Assembly District Committee. He has been a delegate to the Democratic convention several times and was one of two people elected to represent a Presidential Candidate (Howard Dean) in the national election. Barries political work has coined him the name Chief Agitator for his no apologies approach when taking on conservative policies and the Republican Party faithfuls. Among his accomplishments he ran two succesful mountain preservation campaigns and founded the Childrens Art Project known as CAP. .
