Katie Van Veghel

Community Manager in Norwalk, Connecticut

I have found myself sitting in front of the television with my dad and brother yelling "Go Pack Go" for as long as I can remember. In the summer, my family would travel to Shea Stadium to watch Mike Piazza and the New York Mets.

Not only was I watching sports, but I was playing them as well. Along with taking dance classes, I played soccer, tennis and paddle tennis.

Though I loved the sports I participated in, I always had more interest in the sports I wasn't capable of playing. Football and hockey have consumed my mind for as long as I can remember. Whether it was cheering on the Green Bay Packers every Sunday, or hoping that the New York Rangers would make another run at the Stanley Cup during the playoffs, I surrounded myself with these sports.

While at the University of Tennessee, I took numerous courses that have prepared me for a career in media. Outside of classes, I worked within the sport industry as a writer covering sports technology for Sport Techie and covering University of Tennessee Athletics for College Spun. These experiences helped me branch into an internship at SPORTS195 in social media and marketing as well as a position within the University of Tennessee’s Media Relations department. Currently, I serve as a community manager for SportTechie HQ. I assist with running the online community as well as manage the site's Twitter account.

Outside of media, I have been an active participant in the University of Tennessee’s Relay for Life Executive Planning Committee, Pi Beta Phi Women’s Fraternity, and the Order of Omega Greek honor society.

My strong communication, organization, and leadership skills along with my comprehensive knowledge of the sports world make me an excellent candidate for a career in media.
